POSITION SUMMARY

An essential part of the research and development team, the Senior Chemist leads the formulation efforts to convert conceptual innovative ideas or technologies into actionable product concepts and prototypes that demonstrate unique and consumer perceivable benefits for Color Cosmetics/Skin Care/Personal Care consumers.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Senior Chemist’s responsibilities will include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Design technical approaches for projects, set up milestones and independently drive projects to their completion.
  • Formulate various types of pigmented cosmetic products, powders (dry/loose), emulsions (creams, gels, liquids), hot pours (sticks).
  • Perform color matching.
  • Perform hands-on formulation on the bench, as well as identifying novel technical opportunities.
  • Create and prepare submissions of bench batches for showcasing to customers, build an internal pipeline and to support customer meetings.
  • Develop batch tickets, specifications, ingredient list, MSDS and product dossiers for products.
  • Maintain an organized up-to-date laboratory notebook, project tracker records and timely, well written project reports.
  • Proactively order raw materials and other laboratory equipment for the R&D laboratory, as needed.
  • Conduct stability testing of products under development.
  • Develop scale up procedures for new and existing products.
  • Troubleshoot any issues related to production, product development or product stability.
  • Communicate with all internal cross-functional groups to progress and track the development of all product initiatives ensuring timely execution.
  • Perform an active role in new product brainstorming sessions with marketing.
  • Develop new concepts and present ideas to management.
  • Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, establishing personal networks.
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Chemical Engineering, Material Sciences or related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience.
  • Formulation experience with pigmented cosmetic products: mascara, powders (dry/loose), emulsion (creams, gels, liquids) and hot pours (sticks).
  • Minimum of 3 years experience and high proficiency in color matching.
  • Strong analytical, problem solving, project management and conceptualization skills.
  • Displays a sense of urgency and initiative with creativity and flexibility.
  • Computer proficiency.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to multitask and work within a dynamic organizational structure.
  • Experience of and understanding of skin chemistry and basic clinical methodologies used to support product and new claims development preferred.
  • Knowledge of federal and state regulations.
  • Ability to drive innovation in a competitive industry within a fast paced research environment.

Typical Working Environment: Work will be primarily in a temperature-controlled laboratory area. On occasion, time will be spent in production area requiring the wearing of safety equipment and dealing with constant equipment in motion and high noise levels. On occasion, may be required to work irregular work hours such as evening and weekends.

  • Laboratory Equipment: Balances, Pipettes, pH meters, UV/Visible spectrophotometer, Total Organic Carbon analyzer.

Essential Physical Tasks:

  • Moderate walking, stooping and bending.
  • Sitting and standing for prolonged periods of time.
  • Perform repetitive tasks and use highly technical equipment.
  • Light lifting and carrying (up to 25 pounds).
  • Vision abilities include close vision, color vision, distance vision and ability to adjust focus.
